Safe access for multi-level roof structure

Multi-level roof structures reflect the increasing complexity of modern buildings. With that complexity comes a growing challenge: designing multi-level safe access systems for ongoing maintenance.

Project: Toowong Multi-Level Roof Access System

On a recent height safety system installation in Toowong, Brisbane, our Onsite Services team were engaged to resolve risks and access limitations across a multi-level roof structure.

With multiple elevations, pitched roof sections and isolated service areas, traditional access methods were not only inefficient — they posed a significant safety risk for maintenance teams.

The Height Safety Challenge

This building featured multiple roof levels with varying heights and transitions, making safe movement between areas difficult. Roof-mounted services such as HVAC units, exhaust systems and general infrastructure required regular access. However, no compliant or practical pathway existed.

Without a purpose-built solution:

  • Trades were exposed to fall risks
  • Access routes were inconsistent and unsafe
  • Routine maintenance became time-consuming and inefficient

The Height Dynamics Solution

Height Dynamics designed and installed a comprehensive and multi-dimensional safe access system (using a bespoke configuration of KattSafe modular components and anchor points) to provide safe, compliant and practical access across all roof levels.

The finished system included:

  • Fixed ladders with integrated cable safety systems for secure vertical access
  • Mini access ladders between roof levels to safely navigate height transitions
  • Custom walkway and step platforms with handrails to improve stability and movement across pitched surfaces
  • Strategically placed height safety anchor points to ensure certified tie-off locations for maintenance work

Most importantly, each element was carefully positioned to create a fully connected access pathway, allowing personnel to move safely and efficiently across the entire roof structure.

Outcomes for Users

The completed multi-level system transformed a previously high-risk environment into a safe, compliant and user-friendly safe access network. Current and future maintenance teams can now:

  • Access all roof levels with confidence
  • Perform servicing and inspections efficiently
  • Operate within Australian safety standards
  • Reduce risk exposure and downtime

Value-Added for Client

Buildings will continue to evolve in design. However, safe access should never be an afterthought. Poor accessibility can lead to increased fall risks, higher long-term maintenance costs and compliance issues for clients. As in the Toowong installation, a well designed solution can overcome these issues by :

  • Delivering connected access pathways, not improvised solutions
  • Integrating safety systems and tailoring these to suit the structure
  • Future-proofing buildings for ongoing maintenance demands
